The Luxor Controller App. The ultimate flexibility and convenience in lighting designing.

The Problem

Outsourcing delays left the Luxor app outdated, impacting both engagement and brand.

Due to a lack of technical resources, the initial version of the Luxor app was developed by a third-party vendor. This reliance on external outsourcing led to significant delays in launching new versions, causing the product to appear outdated and less appealing to their growing younger demographic. The lack of timely updates diminished user engagement and negatively impacted brand perception, making Luxor seem less innovative and out of touch with the expectations of modern, tech-savvy users.

The Process

Joining forces to understand and develop an in-house mobile app.

The process began with a team of professionals, each bringing unique skills to address the project’s, the customer’s, and the business’s specific needs. This team, including members from UX, marketing, and software development (the 'Mob' development team), was dedicated to defining and creating Luxor’s first-ever in-house mobile app.

As the Lead UX Designer on this project, I began by gathering business and technical requirements and gaining a solid understanding of our users. My approach involved addressing the why, defining the what, identifying the who, and determining the success.

  • The Why: Establish Luxor’s vision for developing an in-house mobile app that aligns with the company’s strategic goals, enhances user engagement, and reduces dependence on external resources.
  • The What: Define the scope and objectives for the app, including key features, functionalities, and limitations to ensure a focused and effective development process.
  • The Who: Identify and understand the target users through detailed personas and user journeys, leveraging marketing insights and feedback from industry professionals who interact with current customers.
  • The Success: Determine the anticipated outcomes of the mobile app redesign, including improvements to user experience for existing users, attraction of new users, and ultimately, greater engagement and satisfaction.

I organized interview-format meetings with industry professionals and conducted a card sorting exercise to gather valuable insights. Based on these insights, I developed the information architecture of the app, wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, and design prototypes for the final product. Each design underwent a thorough approval process, including a rigorous review of every step in the UX process by key project stakeholders and a committee of industry professionals. The designs were also hallway tested by individuals who were unfamiliar with the app, providing unbiased feedback on the app's expectations and capabilities.

In addition to the UX work, I also built a website housing all Luxor Controller App UX design deliverables I contributed to, ensuring a smooth development and implementation process.

The Solution

In-house development of the Luxor’s app to leverage internal expertise, minimize external dependencies, and boost sales through targeted engagement.

To develop version 2 of the Luxor mobile app in-house by leveraging the company’s core capabilities, reducing reliance on external resources, and enhancing sales through targeted demographic. This approach ensures the app is built with a deep understanding of Luxor’s strengths and needs, streamlines development using internal expertise, and creates a product designed to engage the specific audience Luxor aims to reach, ultimately driving growth and revenue.

The Result

Luxor Controller App redesign drove 30% sales growth and a significant increase in app downloads

After two years of development, the redesigned Luxor Controller App was successfully launched. Shortly after its release, the company saw a significant 30% increase in Luxor Controller sales, as well as a notable rise in app downloads from both the App Store and Google Play Store.
